Engine blow up.

Anyone read the new issue of Bike magazine? They do a road test with a base model Panigale as all the tests have been the S model and its blows up....

"Coasting from high speed down to an eventual safe stop, oil is splattered and scattered everywhere. The little that hasn't ended up on the road, or over my boats, or drenching the rear tyre, forms in a pool beneath the bike while the sun sets on this 1637-mile Panigale.

The next day, closer poking reveals chunks of aluminium in the bellypan and what looks like a pound-coin-sized hole in the engine cases where something on the inside has tried to reach the outside. It's returned to Ducati UK after our all too brief first (and last) ride for a post mortem. They describe it as a 'major failure' and have returned the machine to Ducati HQ in Bologna for further analysis."

I Ride: Ducati 1199 Tricolore S, 1199 Panigale ABS, Bimota Tesi2D,DB-7,DB1,etc. BMW alpha Racing s1000rr
These things happen, look at how many BMW s1000's engines exploded on a racetrack and the street because of the connecting rod bolt recall issue. So if we only hear of one or even a half dozen that fail its really a very small amount compared to BMW's hundreds of engine failures. I would also think that a magazine test bike would be well "tested" (read abused).

LOL, one Ducati blows up and they put it in their magazine? 1000's of BMW's blow up(including 1 infront of my own eyes!!!) they are off the market for 3 months, and hardly a mention!.

There are a few mags out there that will just never be kind to Ducati for some reason. MCN is one of them, I have yet to read an article on there that is even remotely fair to a Ducati bike, decision or rider. In the meantime they are actively promoting Norton bikes while full well knowing they are taking peoples money and not delivering bikes, that bikes are breaking down if ever delivered, people having to go to court to get their money back and they are nearly bankrupt! Don't buy a Ducati people they suck, buy a Norton!!! What a load of ^%^%$&%^(& Nortongate | Hell for Leather

Personally I think it has something to do with ad spending.

I'm not sure they are being unfair, it was a bike they had on test and it went bang...

I'm sure its a one off but just thought you should know.

I Ride: 1199 Panigale
In the recent Roadracing World comparison, the Kawasaki ZX-10R blew up. Seems to be a general correlation there between "Magazine Test" and "Engine Scattered"! We've sold a lot of Panigales this year, many have been out to the track, and we've had no engine problems of any kind with any of them, it's been rock solid so far. Not that it can't happen, but if there was an epidemic problem with engine failures it would have shown up already you'd think??

Absolutely. Just interesting to follow what happened to this one.

As long as mine holds together it will be fine

Any chance you're inflating those BMW numbers just a little? I've heard of a few failures from the conrod issue but far from hundreds. If you have a source for those numbers I would be interested to read about it.

dunno how many blow ups from the conrod issue, about 1500 2012 models affected.

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/results.cfm

The recall entails about 8 hrs of labor.

Yes, I had a 2012 that was under the recall. The work was done before I took delivery of the bike. I only put 1200 miles on the bike before I traded it for 1199. I just don't think it's fair to say that hundreds of '12 S1000RR's blew up when that's, more than likely, factually incorrect.

you're absolutely right. I will say, I wouldn't touch a 2012 built in that VIN range, BMW handled the recall on the cheap and instead of putting new motors in as aprilia did on it's 200 rsv4 in 2010 (and aprilia is a tiny company). They let techs at the dealers do the work (about 8-10 hrs I believe). Dunno about you but I'm not thrilled with a tech going deep into an engine on my new bike.

That said, I love the s1krr I rode at the code school fro two days.

Honestly, that's the only reason I traded my S1K for the 1199. No matter how much I tried to convince myself that my engine was reassembled correctly I just couldn't overcome my mental block. Never really trusted it at 12k+ RPMs. In the back of my mind it was going to let loose and cover my rear tire in oil and you know the rest of the story if that happens. I will be the first to say that the BMW is an awesome machine, no doubt about it. However, the way BMW handled the entire ordeal was a complete and total cluster F--K!

Some serious exaggerating going on in this thread. Either folks have bad information are just hating. Not sure which...
The 1199 is a great bike. No need to make up things about other bikes.

i'm curious about one thing, i have heard that the first design aprilia sxv's had an issue with oil leaking in the cylinder/crank case area. Personally, I know nothing about this but, have been told by reliable source of this to be true. My point being that, from what I have also been told, the 1199 has the same design and some are wondering how long before they see the same kind of oil leak issues? Like I said, curious about this as I am considering buying one. Might be best to wait at least one year as with any new model!!!

Who cares what you think about the 1199 if you have no intention of buying one for a fking year. Piss off and go somewhere else

I didn,t wait. Put down deposit without even sitting on one. So I got one of the first delivered in Australia and am going out with a large group tommorrow for a ride. Enjoying it now, problem free. Sick of reading shit comments like this in this forum

Wait a year....wanker

Wow so, we have some as you say wanders that are easily pissed off here. I am merely asking if anyone knows anything about this or has heard anything about this. if you are a starbucks rider you will know nothing of this. if you are mechanical and do a lot of your own work (as I do), it may make sense to you. bradp51 and WAfatboy (sounds like an HD name). Ive been around and owned more ducatis than both of you put together I'm sure. Last count I owned 17-18 if I remembered all of them and 90% of them were specials (if you know what that is). No need for rudeness or are you just trying to show all of us your mentality?!!! Whatever, go ride your new Panigale and have some fun.

I do recall they had lots of problems on the sxvs but as to whether it's the same design I don't know.

It's also one reason I am looking to get a Panigale S. There treatment of the customers in this case was a lot like I have seen with their cars. I love the bike but don't like the c.s. I was a bit underwhelmed by my Pani test ride though so I am still up in the air with what I am going to do next.

Eric

And of the 1500 that were fixed only a handful had problems (I donbt beliece is was anywhere near hundreds much less thousands), some of those after the recall was announced. I would not have ridden the bike after the announcement but that is just me.
