This isn't that great of news, Id prefer to keep the "rarity" of our machines intact. While 10k isn't a big number relative to the US population, Id still like it to be less :-) The higher that number climbs, the lower your resale and even if that don't matter, your "cool factor" will drop....

I dunno about that, i still think the top end bikes like Panigales will continue to be rare machines. Ducati needs to evolve or perish, more bikes sold to the population that serve as cash-cows the better, so they have the resources to invest in R&D, racing and continue to make superbikes like the pani. If done right, i dont think it will dilute the exclusivity of the brand. Look at Porsche, even with the many cayennes around (and soon to be released cajun/macan), the 911 model has not really been diluted and is still lusted after.

I agree with you but since it is what it is the plus side is the economy of scales factor will be a plus that means after market parts/OEM parts should get cheaper and more designs of different aftermarket parts should become abundant.

The 10,883 number is for all NA including US, Canada and Mexico.
The US saw 25% more Ducati's in 2012 than 2011, Canada 25%, Mexico 7%. More competitive pricing may have helped sales. Irregardless, the mystique of the Ducati won't change.

It's a double edged sword no matter how you slice it. I thought about getting an F4RR instead of the pani, but the "cool factor" also came with a nightmarish distance to travel to get it worked on and a scarcity of places to find parts. I'm all for exotic stuff, but it definitely has a downside.

Disagree on the resale value. For resale value to be high, the public needs to have heard of the item.

Odd example: I buy expensive Italian clothes on eBay. Armani suits (which everyone has heard of) sell for WAY more than Zegna suits (generally, only people who know clothes have heard of Zegna) do, even though Zegna retail prices are literally twice as much.

Even worse, Banana Republic (which even people in small Midwest towns have heard of) sells for almost retail prices.

My point: the more the merrier
