1st service today, so now my rev counter reads that i can do 10.5k before i start to hit the red line! And my dealer said that so long as i dont spend all my time up there and gradually let the bike see a few more revs then it should be fine to ignore the 7k rev limit so thats wha im gonna do!! Anyway back to the title of the thread, when they took my bike for a test ride after th service the seat cowl popped off and bounced down the road! it had the venture shield on ( i can confirm it works and protects against scratches!!) However the mechanic was baffled about why it happened as he says that they never touched the seat lock,Funny enough when i picked it up the same thing nearly happened to me, the seat cowl popped open and hit me on the back, luckily it didnt come completely off and i was able to stop and click it back into place, thinking at the time that i hadnt locked it back in properly when i checked it out before i rode off from the dealers. They have replaced the seat cowl for me and have ordered new venture shield for it. However im not sure if its all that secure now ?? has anybody else had this happen to them?? To be fair to the dealer they have said that if it does happen again they will replace the lock and seat cowl free of charge. |

Rear cowl on mine came off on 1st ride. Told dealer when I took it in for its 1st service & they said they would order me one as has a few scratches on it. Not particularly bothered, but only noticed when called in for petrol & it wasn't on anymore. Drove where I'd been & found it at edge of road. Suppose should be grateful if was still in one piece, or hadn't been nicked. |

Never happened to me, but just so we are on the right page are you guys hearing a click once you place the seat back in place? That click signals its been locked into place. If not then the seat isnt locked into place properly explains why then your seat are coming off.

nope i heard the click after mine came off the 1st time and i always listen for it and give a quick "tug" for good measure. I managed to keep a fairly hefty disc lock under mine and im wondering if that can bounce around enough to flick the latch from the inside?? |

My seat cowl came off during second ride, did not notice till I stopped for a break. i was surprised as it seemed to be locked in correctly. I tried looking for it but without success. I replaced it with the passenger seat and ordered a replacement. I wonder if there is something wrong with the lock mechanism, I noticed I am not the first person to lose it. I wonder what will happen next...had no such problems with the s1000rr. |

Mine came off while riding, felt it hitting me in the butt. Reached around and grabed it before it fell, set it on the tank and pulled over. It was my fault, I had turned the key earlier at home but not removed the cowl because I heard no click and the cowl did not remove easily. I thought it was jacked up. Later I realized you have to tap it from the back > forward to remove. Hum.... |

QUOTE] I had exactly the same thing today, Felt a slight bump on the butt and reached round just in time to catch it. This was just after the dealer had done the first service sadly, nowt to do with me. |

Mine flew off, got nicked up pretty good, ordered a replacement. I'm constantly paranoid after locking it now, and my procedure is that I don't leave the key in while locking it, I take the key out, then wait for the click. And give it a good tug to be safe before taking off.

Mine flew off on the first ride home from the dealer. Brand new Tri!!! Pulled over on 95 and walked back 1/2 mile to get it. Scuffed to bits. Fortunately the dealer replaced it; said since they touched it last on the 'walk around' before I mounted it, they handled it. Got the replacement, but I left the old one on. Adds character and makes for a great story.

Happened to me today. Apparently the seat cowl fairy exists because mines nowhere to be found. How much is this going to cost me? Fuck!

I had my cowl off while doing a bit of work and looked to see some masking tape with red paint on it wrapped around the metal pin that engages in the catch. Been there since it left the factory. I wonder if this has been an issue stopping the latch engaging properly

Thanks for resurrecting this thread Jay! Before I went out for a ride to the shop today I checked the rear cowl, sure enough it was loose and I clicked it in place. Last opened at the dealer...
