did the first ride last night with the wrapped header. 1 layer of titanium exhaust wrap. no heatshield cover put on. ![]() the screw was glowing after 10 min. ![]() ![]() to get a better feeling, i rode in shorts. the first few minutes with around 170F is already got waaay too hot. with the motor running up in the 200F range, it started to really burn my butt. the legs as well. i also rode in shorts when i picked the bike up the 1st day, so i had a good comparison. the original layout with the shield and no wrap was way better. i will take the wrap off and put the shield back on. probably rather a CF shield... |

Thanks for the info Phil. Did you try another ride with pants on after to see if there was a difference? Also, what brand and type of wrap did you use? I have my wrap in hand and have just been trying to find a free moment to do it.

![]() Thanks for testing and saving us all the time and effort. I know the bike gets hot but I really hardly notice at speed. I wouldnt mind though if Ducati cam out with a better solution

I will take another testride with full leathers on, to compare. I just hoped the wrap had more of an effect. It seemed the shield plays an important role in the aerodynamics in that area to stream away some heat. Unfortunately, to mount the heat shield back on, i will have to take off the rear header again (- not looking forward to it!) or take off the whole tail section ??? The temperatures around here are in the 90s at the moment, so this also comes into the equation. The product is from DEI : Titanium Exhaust Wrap with LR Technology 010128 | Purchase DEI, CryO2, Ny-Trex, Boom Mat & SPA Turbo Products | Design Engineering, Inc. - Thermal Performance Products Anyone knows if the carbon fiber heat shield can be installed with the headers on? (I know it's for the termis , but will it also fit on the standard manifold?) |

Maybe a better option is ceramic coating with a CF heat shield lined with Thermal tape?

I will do the run in in a couple of days and then have the headers fitted at the first service, then go for another long run and after this I should be able to give a bit of feedback on the difference if any. I have been told by alot of people that doing the headers has made a big difference in temps and airflow through them....but of course until you try it yourself there is always that little bit of doubt......human nature I guess

well guys, i decided to leave the wrap on as i like the looks and just add the standard heat shield. both together - way better. i assume the shield does not really shield the heat , but has an aerodynamic influence on how the hot and surrounding air rise up. the shield still gets hot, but with another test ride in shorts, it was way more comfortable. hint: for reinstalling the heat shield, get yourself a torx 40, take out the lower 2 screws of the rear frame, open the upper 2, take off the seat and the upper tank holding brackets (2 screws, 2 nuts) lift up the tank (also take off the black lock cover in the front) and then raise the rear + support it from below. should have done that before wrapping, gives you way more clearance! enjoy! .. and yes, it's time to clean up the garage... ![]() Last edited by Phil; June 24th, 2012 at 10:46 AM. |

The entire point of heat wrapping an exhaust system is to maintain the highest possible EGT (exhaust gas temp) throughout the entire system; header to tip... By maintain heat you maintain high flow. Changes in temperature in any gas induce turbulence from differences in pressure... Also, heat wrapping is not a one step process, it is intended to be chemically sealed as a second stage... This may be why you are not seeing the effect you had hoped for. Hope this helps! BTW, first post from a prospective buyer!

With regard to heat shields, you're going to want something with a very high specific heat! This will deflect the heat. A very low specific heat, as previously mentioned, will absorb and re-radiate thus defeating the purpose. Material with a low specific heat however will cool at the same quick speed with which they heat up... I would go CF personally... |

the cf cover comes with termis, it also has reflective foiil attached to the inside, what are your thoughts of the reflective foil for the heat deflection? Quote:

I wouldn't think a thin foil is going to have a huge effect other than protecting the carbon twill from burns pending the shields proximity to the pipe...

I was thinking of doing the coating here soon. I have the DEI heatwrap on there now and while i did notice a very slight difference, it wasnt much. I feel most of the heat in general. Coming off of the engine itself. Personally im going to try to hunt down some black heat wrap, and do the entire treating process to see if it might make a difference on my buns. My thighs can suffer lol. The only issue i see with the CF is that if you crack or chip it even once, it destroys the fiber inside and makes it practically useless.

Did exhaust wrap when I had my R1, and it helped a lot. Plan on doing the same with my 1199, but waiting until my Termi full exhaust goes on to kill 2 birds with one stone. |

I installed the full Termi system and had the pipe wrapped, but it's insanely hot. Don't really like riding it unless I'm wearing leathers, and stopping at a stop light is not unbearable, but unenjoyable, especially on a warm (>70-75 deg F) day.

with or without the cover? when i did my first test ride without the cover (standad system - metal cover) at 80F in the evening, in shorts, it felt like slow roasting bacon... with the shield on it was way better. |

You guys do know that Ducati is planning on addressing this issue before the end of the year with a new header cover as well as a cover for the rear cylinder head right? So just be patient, help is on the way LOL.
