Ducati Multistrada Pikes Peak impressions?

Little dilemma here causing a little marital discord.

The 1199 Tric is great. The full system is great. Getting the passenger pegs on and off is a nightmare with the full system.

On the odd occasion I take the wife out I used to just pop the rear hangers on my 1198 in two minutes and more importantly get them off again afterwards.

So this has left me a bit of a decision. Also two mates recently bought BMW GS1200s with all the touring gear on as additional bikes to their super bikes.

I like the idea of a bit of touring now and again with friends so I was wondering if anyone had a multistrada and how they liked it or not as the case maybe.

I was thinking maybe a pikes peak with panniers for weekends away would suit the missus on the back for weekend blasts to north Wales and clip the panniers on for a bit of touring.

Keeping the 1199 Tric in its natural one up state purely for my amusement.

Any feedback?

Ps anyone with experience of a multi strada and a BMW GS or super tenere, triumph tiger etc...

I have a multi and I must say the bike is fantastic. Wife loves the bike and is very comfortable. I had it at the track a couple fo times and was a blast. I had a Kawi Concours, Honda St1300 and both were good but no comparison to the Multi.

The bags are decent for a weekend run but nothing great. I have the full termi system on and the bike moves. Torque is fantastic!

Any issues with the centre stand? I have read it gets in the way of your left foot somehow and that it drags a bit round the twisties?

I'm thinking of either a red S Touring which has the centre stand or a pikes peak no centre stand with optional panniers and top box.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

I have both and echo the comments that tstephenson stated. I have owned many motorcycles and the PP is the most versatile motorcycle I have ever owned (not to mention a ton of fun to drive). When I ride with my wife or daughter I use the top case which provides a very nice backrest and storage for 2 lids. I don't have the center stand but several father market ones are available with a shorter push bar to avoid grounding. The PP is a head turner, but any model Multi is a great addition to your riding experience.

I also have both the 1199S and a Multistrada 1200S Touring. The Multistrada replaced a 1200GS, and is used mainly around town as a big scooter and for single and two up touring. When I had the 1200GS it was only brought out once or twice a year for the long distance tour, and I used the sports bike (999 or 1198 at the time) for my fun ride outs in between. I ordered the 'strada before it was released, about October 2009 from memory, and had one of the first ones in the country, I think it arrived about April 2010. I have had it for just over 2 years now and love the bike...even taking it out just for fun.

In 2010 and 2011 I did the long distance tour solo, with my wife riding her own bike. Last week we went two up on the 'strada and did nearly 3000 miles in 10 days. Great bike two up, fitted a set of Dunlop Sportsmart tyres which are now shot after 3000 miles but worked great. Took the bike down through the Alps, into Italy back via Austria and Germany and the bike was great fun two up with luggage.

I would recommend a new screen, the standard one is slightly too low. I also got my dealer to shorten the centre stand kick lever, which did catch my heel and was annoying but is now fixed and losing about 2 cm in length hasnt made it at all difficult to operate. Prior to getting this done I used to just keep the centre stand as a paddock stand and only attach it in the garage.

I havent had many issues with the bike, which has now about 10,000 miles on it. Shortly after getting it one of the indicator lights on the dash failed which meant a new dash just to replace a warning light. It also got a new radiator as the original one wasnt as effective as it should have been, again just a faulty unit I believe and sorted under warranty. The latest slight issue is around the "red button" on the keyless go. In a very wet Austria last week the bike refused to shut down and some water clearly has got into the switch unit, however all appears to be back to normal now that things have dried out so I will get it looked at during the next service.

I highly recommend the Multistrada 1200S. The engine is great, suspension perfect and it is as much if not more fun than the 1199 when you are not fully in the mood for a full on blast. Also works very well two up, with and without luggage.

Hmmm sounds like another bike is on the horizon then, thanks to all for the info.

I have my old 1198 paddock stand which fits apparently so might bin the centre stand. I'm guessing the side stand is more than ok for the bike with full luggage, although shortening the centre stand seems like a reasonable option too.

The dealer has a red new touring in, and is getting delivery times for me on the Pikes peak.

Since the dear old 1199 Tric has to go in for it's bolt recall next Tuesday I have booked a couple of hours on their strada to see how it feels.

So far I have heard nothing but good reviews.

Thanks again.

I remove it and only use it when I do service on it. I find it very nice to do simple service like chain clean and lube, oil changes... The pikes peak is a cool look but not sure of the value when you have to purchase the panniers separately.

Ok thanks for all the info guys, after much deliberation, the Pikes Peak arrives tomorrow!

That's the end of the 1199 full system with passenger pegs problem, now I can keep it as nature intended all to myself!

Pics to come!

I'm in the same boat as you and I just picked up my PP last week. Traded in the 1098 SFS for it. It's a fantastic bike. A bit lazy feeling for me though. So I'm swapping out the bars for something a bit more aggressive. 2 up is fantastic.

Power is great. I have the different modes. The bike feels a bit big so it takes some getting used to.

Keep us posted on what you think!

I picked up the PP today, very different from the Tric. Good and grunty though, goes like stink through the mid range for such a big bike. Front end feels ultra lite, could do with a steering damper, not because it shakes it's head but I'm just used to that slower feeling at low speed.

Mrs 1199 went on the back for 30 miles and loved it! So that's the result I was after the Tric is all mine again!

The PP is super looking in the flesh but Mrs 1199 says its too quiet so full exhaust it is, I hope I can find a header that allows me to use this end can coz it looks great.

Any aftermarket can recommendations?

A lot of the FJR boys are moving over to the super tenere. They recon it handles a lot better than the FJR, and has more reliability than the GS. Pillion on is pretty good.

Went for a 200 mile blast on the PP on Thursday night, in sport mode it was amazing. I actually think I can ride it quicker than the 1199. That probably highlights my lack of riding skill more than the bike but even though the motor is still tight, it pulls like hell in the midrange which makes it so easy to hussle along at a high rate of knots.

It's a real confidence inspiring bike, I can see how people have seen multi riders chasing down super bike riders, it's a beast.

It will be interesting to get back on the 1199 now, as leaning the PP over so far being so tall definitely gives you confidence, I'll see if it transfers.

Other PP news, it's way too quiet. I have got a Leo Vince de cat pipe here ready to go on, hopefully it will make it sound better without being too loud as it has a baffle in it. I'll wait for the first service to get it out on. Job looks like a pig to do, removal and refit of the actuator for the flap being the bit that puts me off doing it myself. This option keeps the stubby Termi pipe that looks great.

On that note followed my mate on his new R1200GS what a great sounding bike that is with the stock exhaust.

Agreed . I have a Pikes Peak and it's a different bike with full system absolutely transformed that motor .

+1 for full system, power wheelies in 3rd. The other day I needed to do a quick run for two six-packs. Threw the top box on and went to supermarket. On way home there's an overpass with no cameras about 1k from a traffic light so if you time the light correctly you get a free run with no traffic.

Kept front up into second and then let it down, cruised in 3rd and then gunned it in 4th when I hit the overpass, probably doing 150 or 160kmh and up comes the front in 4th . Never ever had so much fun with a "grocery" bike.

Belated congrats on the PP Andy .... I somehow missed this thread and the pics

It does look amazing and is a proper looker.

I had an 1150GS in Pacific Blue/White with all black engine, that was pretty enough. Hated the gearbox, which was just so slow and heavy. Performance was OK, but nothing like the MS by the sounds of things.

You found an excellent solution to ease the fitting/removal of 1199 pillion pegs
