So there seems to be a school of thought that 1199's that are run-in hard are less likely to smoke upon start up, but evidence is anecdotal and a little contradictory sometimes. The purpose of this poll is to gather some hard data. Please answer the poll once you've covered at least 600 miles and had your first oil service completed.

Insteresting result so far. Too early to be certain, but it looks like 20% of bikes smoke no mattter how they are run in. Please vote, need more results to call it.

This isnt rocket science. To gain horsepower Ducati did what drag race engine builders have done for years and used a very low tension piston ring set and a vacuum pump to keep negative pressure below the rings. What they did different than most engine builders is started the engines life on synthetic oil. We always started with Dino oil to break the engines in, because the synthetic is so slippery it makes seating the rings very difficult. mine smoked like a two stroke on start up, no exageration at all. At 85 miles I took it to the track and rode it hard at a moderate pace coaching the intermediate group. The smoke was none existant in 2 sessions. You need to run the thing up thru the gears under a good load, and letting is slow on the engine braking helps too. |

![]() Went out for a 50 mile blast taking the bike up to the 6k rev ceiling as hard and fast as I could, now no smoke at all! ![]() ![]() Looks to be the consensus on here! Hit the twisties as hard as you can with the 6k limit. Not easy but seems to work....... | |

INteresting, the other day, I cranked up the bike and ran it for only a couple minutes to check engine temp as I'd changed coolant. Shut it down, started a little bit later and brief smoke, only time I've encountered this.

Mine had slight smoke when I bought on the first two or three starts. It then hasn't smoked again, and continues not to smoke (1000 miles completed so far).

I agree with zvez, when i picked bike up from dealers it smoked on start up. Rode 60miles home using upto 6K revs. Parked it for an hour then went back out later and no smoke. Went out on it again following day no smoke noticed, did about 75miles then home. Took it to work on the 3rd day a brief 1.5 mile ride, probably didnt even get to normal temperature parked it and didnt start it then for 2 days. On the next start up just to give someone a listen to the sound these thing make and got a load of smoke, blue oil smoke. Seems to me if bike hasn"t had a fair run and up to normal temp and everythings expanded as much as it can then there must be a little oil seepage going on. Came out to start bike this morning after a proper run last night and purposely looked at exhaust and presto,no smoke.

I ran mine per the dealers recommended break-in which was first 300mi @ up to 5k and then add 1k after that per 100mi. Most of the 621 miles were in the twisties with varying load through various gears. Then took it in for the first service and they said to go have fun. No smoke on start-up or riding that I'm aware of. Last edited by flobrandx; July 21st, 2012 at 03:00 PM. |

650 miles. Smokes some on start especially if it wasn't warmed up well on the previous run and especially if left idling for a few minutes from cold start. Break in by Ducati recommendations. Oil consumption less than 4oz during break in. Anybody still smoking after 1500 mi or so? If so what has your dealer said? |

Mine smoked a bit for the first 100 miles or so. I found it annoying so I went for a ride up the mountain and then used engine braking only to slow down on the way back down the mountain. It never smoked again. I now have 1000 miles on mine and it runs quite well. Oil consumption has been zip.
