Do not by aftermarket carbon fiber exhaust guards until you read this....

Well, I made a purchase of a matte carbon fiber exhaust cover for the stock exhaust but there is a design flaw that you have to be aware of before installing it otherwise you will suffer a failure. Of course some variation may be at play with the new model but I will include a few checks.

#1 Before ordering find out if your current metal cover is making contact with the exhaust behind the rear shock at the point of connection at the rear cylinder.

If so, do not order a carbon cover until it has the described change or it may suffer from thermal failure.

If not, maybe you will be ok.

#2 When installing the new CF cover perform the same check.
If it fails, remove it and send it back.
If it passes, it may work out but I would highly suggest that you wrap the exhaust to reduce the heat signature generated by the exhaust. With luck it will clear.

The problem is that the vendors copied the Ducati exhaust cover exactly. Which generally would not be a bad thing but the Italians messed up the design themselves as seen by the chaffing of the OEM cover on the left side. So another idiot followed those idiots and here were are... Me as an idiot for not checking and sending back back stuff and a loss of an hour of labor.

Word to the wise, check it and check it again.
PIC#1 Failure on the left side
PIC#2 Good clearance at rear and right side
PIC#3 Left side head clearance zero
PIC#4 Right side no damage
PIC#5 Evidence of Ducati's design miss

Wow

Sorry to see this dude. Which brand is this by the way so we all know?
Of course everyone knows my preference on finish, so I gotta throw matte under the bus on this one

But seriously, love to know what brand. Take a look at the CCR post I just put up and how my friend Sean can do anything to carbon. He can fix that for you if they dont warranty it, whoever they are. It's not a DP one is it?

Gunny it is RC Racing. I am currently waiting for the response from their rep. I am asking for a full refund. I would have bought DP but they do not offer stock CF. You can get a CF cover but only with the full Termi setup. I see carbovani has the exact same design on their piece as mine so I would suspect that it too will suffer from the same issue with the exception of heat tape application. To me that is just a bandaid for the failure that will occur later. The key is to keep the same air gap all around and notch out the carbon where the rear sub-frame attaches to the motor to keep it from being pinned against the exhaust.

Upon removal of the rear sub-frame, my observation was wrong. The alignment of the cover is just not correct. it just does not align correctly with the exhaust when all of the screws are put in accompanied by the flare of the exhaust at the point of connection.

PIC1 Removed CF Cover
PIC2 OEM prior to install showing very little clearance

Wow, Thanks for that tip! I was going to throw some cash for a new full carbon fiber heatshield that is the same design as our stock oem metal one...

Wheeeew... good thing I read this post. I think I will just put aluminized Thermal tape underneath my stock metal heatshield..... Heat doesnt really bother me much, as I wear leathers all the time when riding my Panigale.

Yeah, reach down and grab your reservoir after a ride sometime. You won't grab it long!!! Smoking HOT, ask me how I know as I looked down at the heat shield and ever so gently rested my bare hand against the unit. Guess I should have kept that glove on a little bit longer.

So a company takes a stock part, assumes it is perfect, uses it as a pattern for their part thus inhereting any flaws.

I guess this particular company never thought of doing a test fit of their cover. Dumb! And if they did then they did not notice it. Poor QC!. Or if they did notice it they figured "screw it" we already made the molds. The customers won't notice it. Lack of Ethics! Or they figured, they are Ducati owners they are used to it (???). Insulting!

As I see it, this is a text book case of how not to do business.

I'll be adding this company to the "do not buy from them" list.

Thanks for sharing this information. It looks like there's a problem with the clearcoat on it. Heat of the Panigale + regular clearcoat = Bad idea.
