Racing the 1199, share your experience

I'm thinking about switching to the 1199 for next season. I'm currently racing in a Dutch competition on a 1198s, tuned with lot of RS parts, RT fork, TTX etc. It has loads of torque and HP.

please share your track / race experiences here

I will start. I run Great plains CCS. I love the Pani. I raced a well set up 1098 and loved it once I put the 30 mm triples on. The Pani is great out of the box for me. My weight is 170 lbs and the bike just works for me with a sag set , and just a little compression and rebound added. It seems to go where you put it, and allows you to change your line if needed. The Pani doesn't run wide on the gas like the 1098 did. The power is not as brutal down low, and the brakes are not as "grabby" as the 1098. The traction control just plain works, and the engine braking control is starting to grow on me. It makes the rear more stable on corner entry which has given me a bit more corner speed.

so the higher cornerspeed you can travel, makes up for the lesser amount of bottem power you have on corner exit?

How is it in acceleration, can you keep up with the BMW1000RR?

The only time I have had 1000rr's start to pull away is towards the end of a straight where the top end advantage goes to the BMW. on the rest of the track, the Pani is so agile and easy to ride that it takes an extremely skilled rider on the BMW to keep up. Both riders being of the same calibre and speaking from experience on both bikes, the Pani is just easier to ride fast.

I am obligated to use street legal tires in my race class, so I use Pirelli Supercorsa SC

How about the gas respons, I've read that at the first 5% trottle opening it is a bit aggressive? What's your opinion?

Traction control, how does it function in race mode?

That's interesting as it goes in the face of virtually every journalist that has ridden the bike haha! Glad to hear it!

I also run the SC compound and have not had an issue with them. As for the missing low end, just keep the motor on a boil and you won't miss it. This thing pulls like a freight train when you rev it!!!!!! The throttle response is fine, just a bit touchy, but I raced a 1098 and that thing was like a light switch at times. The touchy-ness gets way better if you keep the rev's up, so just exercise smooth throttle control and there is no issue (power commander is supposed to be out soon, so all that will be tuned out then). I have both my sport and race modes set to 195hi and traction control set to 5, and EBC set to 2, and I love it. The traction control works really well if you trust in it.
How do you guys have yours set?

Big difference between Race DOT and street tires as Im sure you know?
If you want a VERY good Pirelli rep who ships for like $20 let me know. This guy is so good you can call his cell from the track, tell him air and track temp, and he gives you both hot and cold PSI to run them with! Best source for Pirelli and Bridgestone tires I have ever found during my racing career!

oh damn! I just looked and saw you are in netherlands man! lol. dont know about shipping or DOT's there, sorry! !

Jarelj, You are running Bridgestones aren't you? I have a bunch of 190/55's left over from my 1098 and was wondering if the size diff freaks out the traction control too much. What is you experience?

Gunny, what pressure would you advise for an average day ( say about 25°C ) for the stock pirelli tires? I'm looking for a good base setting.

on the 1198, i use Supercorsa SC2, front 2.1 bar and rear 1.9 bar (hot, in the tire warmers)

After getting my bike setup by a suspension guy (Dave Moss) he recommended a starting cold pressure on the OEM tires (supercorsa SP)of 27(1.86 bar)rear 29 (2.0bar)front.

that sounds more like a street setup rather than track? Although the SP is different from the SC tire

nope those were recommendations by the suspension guy (and he's worked with several panis in a track setting for track days not racing). And it is for OEM SP tires NOT the SCs.

Those pressures would be too low for the street IMHO. Here's the chart I've posted elsewhere for pirelli track pressures for SC1s according to pirellis chart the range for the rear is 25-28

Dave knows his stuff. Some of it depends on your pace, the track, etc. I ran 25/27 and found it to be better for me on the SC1 front and SC2 rear.

I started with DTC 5 just to get used to the power curve of the bike out of corners but found that it was cutting in all the time and weakening my drive out of corners so I have since dropped to DTC 3. At 3 you can get much better drives out of the corners without having to worry to much about the bike going sideways. EBC 2 is great as well. I am loving the Ducati EBC as it makes it so easy to come into corners much hotter than I normally would with the rear end wiggling all over the place.

Well I don't know about EVERY journalist . I have read a lot of articles that praise the Pani for how much easier it is to ride, especially in comparison to the 1098/1198. My last bike was the 1198 SP so it was a huge difference coming over to the Pani. I honestly like the bike better in every way and don't really miss the mid-range of the 1198 motor. Maybe the Pani just makes sense to me and is easier to ride but I call bullshit on those journalists. The 1000rr never feels as settled for me as the Pani does.
